Why visit Corte
Far from the bustle of the coast, Corte beats to the rhythm of deep Corsica. Set where two rivers meet, surrounded by mountains, the town was once the capital of Pascal Paoli's independent Corsica. It has kept a quiet pride and a strong identity you feel from the first alleys.
Choosing Corte for your holiday means betting on authenticity: here, you take your time. You savour a coffee on cours Paoli, climb to the citadel at sunset, head out in the morning towards gorges and lakes. It is also the perfect base to explore the whole island, so central is the town.
The citadel and Eagle's Nest
Impossible to visit Corte without climbing to its citadel. Perched on a rocky spur, it dominates the whole valley and offers a breathtaking panorama over the old town roofs and surrounding mountains. The Eagle's Nest, its oldest part, seems suspended above the void.

Wandering the old town
Upper Corte is best discovered on foot, through paved alleys and stairways. You pass granite houses, shaded squares and lovely viewpoints at every turn. Take time to get a little lost: that is often when the best travel memories are made.
Coming back down to cours Paoli, the town's lively artery, you will find restaurants serving Corsican cuisine, welcoming terraces and local producers. Charcuterie, cheeses, island wines and craft Corsican beer: food is part of the journey too.

Nature around Corte
Corte is surrounded by natural wonders. Minutes away, the Restonica valley unfolds its gorges, natural pools and mountain lakes. On the other side, the Tavignanu valley offers a more secluded riverside hike, ideal for a quiet day.
Lovers of open spaces will also appreciate the proximity of the GR20, the legendary long-distance trail that crosses the island north to south. Corte is a natural rest point for those setting out on it.
Nearby villages
Around Corte, several villages let you discover rural Corsica, its traditions and mountain landscapes. Here are a few easy outings from the studio:
- Venaco, Santo-Pietro-di-Venaco, Poggio-di-Venaco, Riventosa and Casanova: charming villages in the Venaco area, with old houses, small churches and fine views.
- Soveria and Castirla: two peaceful villages north of Corte, on the Niolu road.
- Calacuccia and the Niolu villages: a fine excursion into the heart of the Corsican mountains, between pastoral landscapes, traditional villages and views over Lake Calacuccia.

The best time to visit Corte runs from May to October, with pleasant weather and nature at its best. Spring and early autumn are perfect for hiking, while summer invites swimming in the Restonica.
